Homemade burgers are the best! From caramelized onions to bacon, you get to customize your toppings to your taste! But most importantly, you get to make your own meat mixture. This burger is flavourful and juicy. My kids’ friends have asked me what the secret to this burger was – and refused to believe my answer! The secret to this burger is: vegetables! The meat is mixed with onions, peppers and garlic, but they are so finely chopped – almost pureed – that they are not really visible. Not only do the vegetables provide lots of flavour, they also provide juiciness.
This recipe is easily multiplied. I usually buy ground meat in a club pack, prepare it all at once and freeze the burgers uncooked. Anytime, we feel like having a quick barbecue, we can just put the amount of burgers we need on the grill. They are easier to cook from frozen as they are otherwise a little too soft to handle.
My favourite burger
3 lbs lean ground meat
1 green pepper
2-3 cloves of garlic
5-6 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
In a food processor, process the pepper, onion and garlic until almost pureed, add the eggs and Worcestershire sauce and process one more time.
Mix the vegetable/egg mixture by hand with the meat and shape into patties and freeze them.
I use approximately 1/2 cup of the mixture per burger. You can make them a bit smaller if you prefer, but be aware that they will dry out much quicker when cooking. They shrink during cooking and puff up in the middle, so put a little indentation in the middle to get a flat burger. Be careful not to overcook the burgers, as that will also result in a drier burger.
